Hollin House Japanese Woodblock Printmaking Residential Workshop, Summer 2025

Highgreen, Northumberland, Thursday 3rd - Monday 7th JULY 2025

Next Summer, you are invited to join me at Hollin House, nestled in the beautiful Northumberland National Park, for a unique printmaking experience. Water-based woodblock printmaking, known as Mokuhanga, is a captivating technique using wood, water-colour and washi (Japanese paper). You will be guided through this meditative technique in the home grounds of the artist, offering an exquisite nature-rich environment in which to draw inspiration from. Your 5-day, 4 night retreat, including 3 full teaching days, will provide an opportunity to unwind on woodland walks, explore the vast moorland and view the Milky Way within the classified Dark Skies Park.

This workshop promises to introduce you to and/or develop your confidence in Japanese wood-block printmaking to deepen your understanding of this traditional medium. Each stage of the process encourages a slow and mindful approach, from carving the woodblocks to applying the watercolour and passing the prints with a hand-held press, known as a baren.

Enjoy retreating at the end of each day to the comfort and luxury of Hollin House, a bright and spacious five bedroom, five bathroom home on the grounds of Highgreen Manor. You will be provided with a buffet breakfast, home cooked vegetarian soup and salad lunches each day, along with an endless supply of tea and cake. The evening meal will be an opportunity to cook together as a group with all recipes and ingredients provided for you.

There are 6 exclusive places available, maintaining an intimate atmosphere and plenty of one to one tuition. You are invited to arrive at Hollin House at 3pm on Thursday 3rd July and leave at 11am on Monday 7th July 2025.

The price is £870 for a double bedroom with en-suite shower room. There is also a shared twin room option, a single bed and en-suite bathroom facilities for £720 per person. The price is inclusive of all materials and meals.

TESTIMONIALS

“As someone who has never done any Mokuhanga before I found the course to be a perfect introduction to it's materials, tools and techniques as well as it's wider philosophy and traditions. So much ground was covered and with such generosity.

The food and the house were beyond expectation, with the opportunity to share meals and cook together balanced out by plenty of space to slip away and enjoy the surroundings.”

“I wanted to thank you for the truly inspiring workshop.   I can't think of anything to add.  I've learnt so much and want to learn more.  You're an excellent artist and teacher who inspires your students and fellow artists.”
